When Is Stock Exchange Market Holiday in the New Year?

Is the stock market open for 365 days? There are a few days when the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and bond markets stay closed. In total, the New York Stock Exchange remains off for 9 days and 1 day, it is partial work. Christmas and New Year are official holidays for the stock market. Sometimes, such holidays are not for one day, rather for about a week or so. However, the days around the main holiday are not off for the Stock market.

What about other days like Labor Day or Memorial Day? Well, some mourning holidays like that of George W. Bush are a holiday for the stock market. Along with the weekends, sometimes, the stock exchange centre announces a holiday on a Friday in case the holiday falls on Saturday and Monday when the off is on Sunday. Let’s focus on other holidays for the Stock Exchange in 2021.

Normal Schedule

On a normal day, without any holiday, the New York Stock Exchange is open from Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm (EST). The time zone is America/New York, GMT-05:00.

It is important to note the open hours and the trading hours so that you do not miss any day of profits. For the trading hours, there is usually a timer placed whose rings tell us that trading has begun and another ring tells us that trading hours have stopped.

Juneteenth

Another recent holiday started by President Biden is June 19th. It is a day to remember the day when slavery ended in the United States. The stock exchange observes this holiday too when it falls on a weekday. In case, it is a Saturday or a Sunday, then the NYSE remains open and fully functional.

Thanksgiving Day

It is a partial holiday for the stock exchange and other boards, as it remains open from 9:30 am till 1 pm. If the holiday falls on a weekend, then the day before and after is not a holiday, unlike the others like Christmas or Labor Day. Those days work as usual without any change.

Good Friday

The stock and bond holds regular hours on the day before Good Friday (April 14th) and is a holiday of the actual day (April 15th). Unlike the stock market, the bond market remains open till noon.

The Day Before Memorial Day

In 2022, the day before Memorial Day is Sunday, which is a day off the NYSE. In case, it was a weekday, the stock market would work while the bond market would close early like around 2 pm. Memorial Day is a holiday for the NYSE and bond markets.

July 2

The stock exchange operates as a normal day on July 2nd. The bond markets, on the other hand, close at 2 pm, similar to the day before Memorial Day.

Columbus Day

The Stock Exchange and Nasdaq remain fully functional on Columbus Day which in 2022 is Monday (Oct 10th). What about the bond markets? Well, they are closed throughout the day.

Veterans’ Day

This day is celebrated by the traders similar to Columbus Day, which is at the office. People working in the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq have a full day from 9:30 am till 4:00 pm on November 11th (Friday). The good news is that the employees in the bond markets can take the day off. It is a complete day off.

Black Friday

Wish to go Black Friday shopping? Well, it is the day after Thanksgiving, therefore, similar to that holiday, trading hours will stop early at 1:00 pm. You might have some luck in shopping. As far as bond markets are considered, they also close early around 2:00 pm.

Christmas Eve

It is a day of anticipatory joy and celebrations. The stock market remains open and works regular hours on the day before Christmas Eve, December 23rd (Friday) but is closed on Christmas Eve, December 24th (Saturday). It is closed because it is the weekend. In case it was a weekday, the NYSE and Nasdaq would function at regular hours. The bond markets would work till 2 pm on both days.

New Year Eve

The Stock Market is closed on New Year Eve which is December 31st (Saturday) 2022. The traders will not be able to observe New Year Eve or even New Year because they fall on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Watch out for the days and dates when you won’t be able to trade money or stocks. Although you will be able to trade online since they work 365 days. The NYSE, Nasdaq and bond markets have a lot under control and can change the direction of stocks if you are not careful. So here is the holiday calendar for 2022.
